A 4-km circuit at the heart of Solar Event will be the setting for a race between a dozen full-scale, solar-powered vehicles. These unusual but high-performance vehicles, which are entirely powered by the solar energy stored in their batteries, must demonstrate their efficiency by using as little energy as possible. Sun racers, prototypes and urban concepts will be brought to Savoie from all around the world. Some of them already have impressive track records, notably those that took part in the Panasonic World Solar Challenge, a 3,000-km crossing of Australia, or in the Eco Shell Marathon.
Most of these vehicles were built by students (high schools or engineering schools) as part of group projects that called upon imagination and ingenuity, as well as technical skills in fields as diverse as electro-chemistry, physics and mathematics.
The race also provides schools with the opportunity to develop and successfully complete a collective project that is both educational and fun.
The race will take place over two days and be divided into several legs, one of which will be held at night! A professional jury will award prizes in categories as varied as performance, technical innovation, vehicle aesthetics and the dynamism of the team. A “special” prize will also be attributed by the public.
As well as performance, the objective of this race is to raise young people's awareness of renewable energies, the superb resources they provide and the applications we can expect to emerge. Solar energy is a rapidly expanding sector that will provide numerous employment opportunities in the months and years to come.
